Happy holiday weekend from Schwab Network! Here’s some of what’s ahead this week, barring the usual twists and turns of headlines. China’s markets will be closed all week for Chinese New Year, along with several other Asian markets. We’re past many of the major AI company earnings, but capex worries are likely to remain.

Last week, markets saw turbulence, with volatility stemming from earnings and geopolitical headlines. The S&P 500 floated near 7,000 again, but ultimately couldn’t hit the mark. Oil spiked, and then fell, as the U.S. and Iran continued negotiations and concerns around supply eased. Bitcoin also had a rough week, though it found footing on Friday and made its only green candle of the week; Coinbase (COIN), which had earnings Thursday night, also saw a spike in Friday trading despite reporting a miss.

On Tuesday, we’re still easing into the week. We’ll digest headlines from the last few days – especially if a ‘mini’ government shutdown begins, which is likely. If so, DHS agencies like TSA could be affected, in turn hitting travel. Earnings include Medtronic (MDT) premarket, along with Palo Alto Networks (PANW), Toll Brothers (TOL), Kenvue (KVUE) and Caesar’s (CZR) after the bell. The ADP Weekly Employment report, NAHB Housing Market Index, and Empire State Manufacturing reports are due.

Wednesday, we’ll see a slew of economic data, including MBA Mortgage Applications, Durable Goods Orders, Housing Starts & Permits, Industrial Production, and the latest FOMC meeting minutes. Traders will use these to get a better understanding of the current economy, as well as the Fed’s next moves. The Fed is not expected to cut interest rates until after Jerome Powell’s term ends as Chair in May. On the earnings side, watch for Analog Devices (ADI) in the morning, along with Booking (BKNG), Carvana (CVNA), DoorDash (DASH), Ebay (EBAY) and Occidental Petroleum (OXY) postmarket.

Thursday’s consumer-focused earnings continue: Walmart (WMT) is the biggest name of the week, reporting premarket along with Deere (DE), Etsy (ETSY) and Klarna (KLAR). After the bell, we’ll see Akamai (AKAM) and Live Nation (LYV). Economic data includes weekly Jobless Claims, the Philly Fed Manufacturing Index, Pending Home Sales, and several Fed speakers. Traders will use the latter to build on their takeaways from the FOMC minutes.

Friday’s major event is the PCE report, which will be dissected throughout the day. We’ll also get a 4Q GDP measurement, New Home Sales, and Michigan Consumer Sentiment. There are no notable earnings for Friday, putting more attention on economic data.

Tune into the Schwab Network to keep up with the markets every trading day!
