Financial markets face a busy week from October 12 through October 16, with investors shifting their attention toward a powerful combination of inflation data, consumer spending, and the kick-off of third-quarter earnings.

With the Federal Reserve’s next policy decision scheduled for October 28, incoming economic numbers could play an important role in shaping expectations for interest rates, Treasury yields, and the broader equity market.

The biggest economic event arrives Wednesday with the September Consumer Price Index. CPI should provide another important read on whether inflation pressures are easing enough to give the Fed greater flexibility on monetary policy. Thursday brings another potentially market-moving combination with the September Producer Price Index and retail sales, both scheduled for 8:30 a.m. ET. In addition, retail sales should provide an early indication of the strength of consumer and inflationary impacts to spending.

Third-quarter earnings season kicks off on Tuesday with financial stocks in focus. JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Goldman Sachs (GS), Wells Fargo (WFC), and Citigroup (C) are scheduled to report Tuesday morning, followed Wednesday by Bank of America (BAC) and Morgan Stanley (MS). These results will give investors clarity into consumer and corporate credit, trading activity, investment banking, and the impact of the interest-rate environment on the financial sector.

Technology investors will also have several important reports to watch. ASML reports Wednesday and Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) reports Thursday, providing an early look at semiconductor demand and the strength of the AI-related capital-spending cycle.

This week represents an important intersection of the market's two biggest fundamental drivers, inflation data, and corporate earnings. CPI, PPI and retail sales could reset the outlook for rates and yields, while the first major batch of Q3 results will reflect whether corporate fundamentals are strong enough to support equity valuations.
